"The best solution to crime crisis is to prevent it."

The student leaders of ZSCMST attended the seminar-workshop on Crime and Drug Abuse Prevention last September 3, 2008 at (SCC) Southern City Colleges gymnasium.

This is in connection with the 14th Annual Celebration of National Crime Prevention Week, held every September.

In observance of the said celebration the (NAPOLCOM) National Police Commission coordinated with the NCPW Interagency Technical Working Committee to conduct seminar-workshops in the selected academic institutions of Zamboanga City bringing the theme, " Kapit-bisig Kabataan Tungo sa Kapayapaan," and the slogan "Lakad Kabataan Laban sa Kriminalida."

Student leaders and criminology students from other schools such as UZ, STI and SCC joined to support "Crime Prevention" in their respective campuses. In this institution, the SCC President, Rufa L. Mendez and some club organization officers participated with the assistance of NSTP Coordinator, Elenita Concepcion. Automatically, they become members of (SPSC) Student Crime Prevention Committee of their Campus and the SSC President as the chairwoman.

The ITWC emphasized that crime prevention is everybody's concern and even highlighted that the moral status of the academic instituions right now will be the status of the community in the near future. (Mast Chronicle)

Parents hit ZSCMST new training policy

WHY UNDERGO IN MANILA, WHEN IT’S AVAILABLE HERE?

by Al Alhabshi

The parents of students of the Zamboanga State College of Marines Science and Technology (ZSCMST) have questioned the sudden move of the school requiring their children to undergo certain training in Manila which can be done right here in Zamboanga City.

The parents, who requested not to be identified for the safety of their children, said the school, which is now under the watch of Officer-In-Charge Dr. Milabel Nalzario, has ordered their children taking up Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelors of Science in Marine Engineering to obtain their Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) training this year in a center in Manila.
“The school is now killing us parents. Imagine we will spend more than thirteen thousand in sending our kids to Manila for their SOLAS training. Why do our kids have to obtain their training in Manila when in fact we have the same training here in Zamboanga and it will only cost us more than six thousand,” a parent lamented.
The SOLAS training is a requirement in the issuance of Seaman’s book. The parents said for four years already the BSMT and BSME students of the government-owned state college use to undertake their SOLAS training at the Zamboanga Maritime College here in Zamboanga located in Ayala.
“We have asked why but no one offered us an explanation,” Another parent said.
The parents said all those who underwent training at the Zamboanga Maritime College have met no problem and neither their training was questioned.
They said the only training center here in Zamboanga is an International Standard Organization (ISO) accredited.
“This is exactly what puzzles us parents. Why is the school now making this training difficult and burdensome for us parents and our kids,” another parent remarked
The parents said the unreasonable and illogical move of the school have raised suspicions of something irregular.
“With this move, we can not avoid to think that there is something anomalous going on,” an irate parent said.
As this developed, the parents are calling on the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to investigate the matter.
“How we wish the CHED will get into this controversy in our favor. We can not afford to have our kids trained in Manila. Where will we get that big amount? This is no joke,” the parents said. — Al Alhabshi

ZSCMST: Well-equipped for Excellence

ZSCMST continues to live with its goal of providing the best quality education and training to its students. Its standard and quality of education is comparable to the other known fisheries schools of the country. But, it has provided this kind of education at an amazingly affordable cost.

Throughout the years, it has produced competent graduates who have made the society and the country proud. This institution offers academic and non-academic programs and the best breed of professors and educators that help mold students to become academically competent, socially aware and active, spiritually fit, and morally right.

Given these privileges, the ZSCMST put strong effort in paying forward what they have achieved and received. They value their commitment in serving the country and their fellowmen, especially the poorest in the society. They fight for the truth, for justice, and for equality. They strongly live with the institution’s dream - to embrace excellence!

Challenging and Fun Learning

Studying in ZSCMST is both challenging and fun. With students struggling to get a good education, complying with the admission requirements is a competition. In this institution, you are not judged by your bank account statements nor your annual family income. You are judged with what’s inside your brain, how you deal with people, and where you want to take your future.

Students in ZSCMST enjoy the goodness of life through learning and exploring many things. The nationally acclaimed professors put students to the test by giving them educational activities that prepare them to survive in the real world and bring out the best in them. At ZSCMST, you can truly say that learning is fun.

Getting ready for a Career

As Charles Darwin would say, “In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment.” ZSCMST prepares its students to compete and succeed in the professional world. They face the world with conviction and are equipped with excellent work ethics.

Students are given a chance to step into the career world through on-the-job-training programs. Students experience a life in the workforce. This opportunity allows them to showcase their skills and abilities, at the same time provides a great avenue for future employers to recognize their full potential.

Listening to the Society’s Call

It is believed that in order to learn, one must explore the vast horizon and the outside world. The ZSCMSTs’ commitment to the society pushes them to learn things beyond the four-cornered rooms.

They openly reach out hands to the less privileged and the needy. They participate in activities that promote social transformations and world peace. They do not fear to seek for the truth and fight for justice.

Being socially active enables ZSCMST to practice their rights - the right to be heard and the right to express. They truly respond to the call of making this place a better world to live in.

Quality Education for a better Mindanao

ZSCMST, together with its new administration, faculty, students, and alumni, continuously work to achieve its mission of providing quality education for marine sciences and technology development in Mindanao with its diverse cultures through relevant programs in instruction, research, extension, and community involvement.

The institution shall never cease to produce competent graduates who can lead the nation to progress, citizens who can make a difference by touching other people’s lives, and people who are set to excel.

We don't accept the best and the brightest, we make them!
